Features: The new edition of the Handbook of Ship Structure Mechanics is divided into three volumes. The first volume discusses the basic concepts, principles, and methods applied in ship structure mechanics. The main contents include: static calculations of beams and rods, static calculations of rod systems, plate calculations, and certain problems in elasticity. The second volume primarily focuses on the calculation of inelastic systems, structural stability, and structural dynamics. The main contents include: the basic equations of plasticity and creep theory, limit equilibrium of beams and plate girders, elastic-plastic bending of beams and plate girders, the theory of structural stability, stability calculation methods for rods, thin plates, and plate girders, the theory of structural vibration, vibration calculations for systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom, transverse vibration of rods, longitudinal vibration of rods, torsional vibration of rods, calculations for bending-torsional vibration of rods, vibration of frames, vibration of flat plates, special forms of vibration, and vibration of rods in fluid, among other topics. The third volume provides a detailed discussion on environmental loads, structural response analysis, ship hazardous conditions, and strength criteria, covering topics such as: calculation loads—static loads and local loads, marine environment and modern wave load theory, hull structural strength and load-bearing capacity, shipbuilding materials and their requirements, load-bearing capacity of materials and structures under cyclic alternating loads, structural joints, strength criteria and strength reserves, optimization and hull metal consumption, shipbuilding strength during drydocking and launching, non-traditional problems in ship structure calculations, the effects of temperature on structures, ship ice strength, overall hull vibration, local vibration and its criteria, and prevention and control of vibration in ship living and service compartments. The new edition of the Handbook of Ship Structure Mechanics can serve as a practical reference for shipbuilding engineers and is also available for undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, and researchers in the fields of ship and marine engineering. In recent years, China's shipbuilding industry has made significant progress. On August 18, 2000, China's first 300,000-ton large oil tanker (VLCC) was officially launched, marking the beginning of a new era in China's super-large shipbuilding and symbolizing further advancements in the industry. The development of the shipbuilding industry has placed new demands on ship science and technology. The newly translated Handbook of Ship Structure Mechanics, meticulously translated by China's engineering academician Xu Binghan and a team of ship science and technology experts, is about to be published. This is a timely and meaningful contribution to the shipbuilding industry. As early as the 1960s and 1980s, China had previously translated and published the Handbook of Ship Structure Mechanics edited by the former Soviet scholar Smankin. However, after many years, ship structure theory and design methods have undergone significant changes, especially with the rapid development of electronic computing technology and its widespread application in the field of ship science and technology. The original translation is no longer sufficient for current use. The newly published Handbook of Ship Structure Mechanics was compiled by Pali and his team at the Ship Structure Research Department of the Krylov Research Institute in Russia during the 1990s and has not yet been officially published. The handbook includes new developments in ship structure theory and methods, with many contents that are currently weak or lacking in China's ship structure design field. Compared to previous translations, the new edition is more systematic in content, more rigorous in theory, and more practical in technology. It is not only applicable to traditional ships and structures but also to new types of ships and unconventional structures. The publication of the handbook is also one of the results of scientific research and production exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia in the field of shipbuilding. It is hoped that the handbook's release will play a positive role in the development of China's shipbuilding industry and benefit a broad readership engaged in ship structure design, research, and education in China.
