Features: Treat Vitamins Normally
Since vitamins are beneficial to health, does the more you take, the better? Actually, it's not that simple. In some cases, the recommended daily allowance of vitamins is the amount your body can absorb. In other cases, taking too many vitamins can be harmful to your health. To ensure your body gets the vitamins and minerals it needs, but never create your own super vitamin plan on your own. "Excessive intake of a certain essential vitamin or mineral can be just as dangerous as a deficiency of that nutrient," said Dr. Beverly McCreery-Seller, a professor of nutrition at the University of Arkansas Medical School. She emphasized the new warning issued by the Institute of Medicine, a nonprofit branch organization of the National Academy of Sciences, which has been releasing guidelines on the amounts of various nutrients needed by the human body for decades.
In the new series of reports on the value of nutrients to the human body, the institute has set upper limits—safe maximum levels—for various nutrients that will not pose health risks if consumed by individuals, such as vitamin A, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc, said Dr. McCreery-Seller. Dr. McCreery-Seller believes consumers should also understand these reports because she has encountered too many people taking high doses of vitamin supplements, often in amounts five or even ten times the recommended daily allowance.
"Although men need 900 milligrams of vitamin A per day and women need 700 milligrams, some vitamin supplements contain 7,500 milligrams of vitamin A per tablet, which is more than twice the dangerous upper limit set by the National Academy of Sciences in their report," Dr. McCreery-Seller added. "This is clearly an example of too much of a good thing."
