Features: This book is divided into four volumes: Volume I narrates the historical development of Central Asia before the Han Dynasty in China. During that time, Central Asia was dominated by various groups: the Saixi people and the Sarmatians lived in the north, while the Bactrians and Persians were active in the south. Volume II, consisting of five chapters, describes the history of the Xiongnu during the Western Han Dynasty. Volume III also has five chapters, covering the history of the Xiongnu during the Eastern Han Dynasty. These two volumes also involve the situation in the Western Regions, narrating how the Chinese and the Xiongnu developed their influence in Central Asia. Volume IV is divided into five chapters, with the first two chapters detailing the history of the Southern Xiongnu after the fall of the Han Dynasty, up to the period known as the "Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms." From then on, the orthodox Xiongnu no longer appeared in Chinese history.
