It was praised by the renowned Qing Dynasty literary critic Jin Shengtan as the "Fifth Masterpiece of the Four Masters of Literature." Together with Dream of the Red Chamber, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Journey to the West, it is known as one of China's four great classical literary masterpieces. Water Margin, written by Shi Nai'an in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, was created based on works such as Remnants of the Great Song in Xuanhe and Thirty-Six Apologies for the Outlaws of Liangshan. It inherits and develops the traditional characteristics of ancient Chinese novels and storytelling, making it China's first heroic epic that evolved from historical storytelling. Water Margin draws its material from the story of the rebellion in the late Northern Song Dynasty, focusing on ordinary people rather than emperors, generals, and ministers as the main characters. With its highly artistic expression and vivid literary language, it narrates many engaging stories, creating one hundred and eight heroes of Liangshan. Each character has their own personality, temperament, appearance, and voice. Among the beloved characters, such as Lin Chong, Wu Song, and Lu Zhishen, have become household names as heroes. Meanwhile, storylines centered around these characters, such as "Fighting Guanxi West," "Forced onto Liangshan," and "Wu Song Fights the Tiger," have been passed down through the centuries, becoming the subject of endless discussion among the people. It can be said that each character in Water Margin is a story in itself, making it a true of Chinese legendary literature.
