It is a large-scale comprehensive reference work. The entire set consists of 20 volumes, with volumes 1-18 containing the main entries and volumes 19-20 serving as the index. It includes over 81,600 entries, accompanied by more than 15,300 images and 250 maps, with a total word count of approximately 43 million. This book is also known as The Encyclop?dia Britannica, first published between 1768 and 1771 and founded in Edinburgh, Scotland. In the early 20th century, the copyright of the book was owned by Americans, and it is now published by Encyclop?dia Britannica, Inc., headquartered in Chicago, USA. The book is renowned for its strong academic rigor and high authority and is also the most familiar English encyclopedia among the Chinese intellectual community. The 15th edition of the book was published in 1974, consisting of 30 volumes, and was expanded to 32 volumes in 1985. It is divided into four parts: Index (2 volumes); Subject Classification (1 volume), which is the knowledge classification directory of the entire book; Concise Encyclopedia (12 volumes), containing over 80,000 short entries, and is also a standalone concise encyclopedia; Comprehensive Encyclopedia (17 volumes), with over 670 long entries, systematically introducing knowledge in various disciplines, important figures, history, geography, and more. The book is updated annually with revisions to some entries, and a new edition is published, along with the Annual (1 volume).
