Features: New Century University French was compiled under this context. To achieve the above goals, this textbook has the following characteristics:
1. Unit-based teaching: The textbook is organized into units based on learning themes. Each unit revolves around the same theme, similar to student exercises.
(1) Items with similar functions and notions are grouped together in the same unit, making it easier for teachers to organize instruction and for students to practice.
(2) It facilitates the high frequency of vocabulary related to the same function or notion, aiding students in association and memorization.
2. Block structure: The writing model of this textbook is completely different from traditional ones. Each unit is divided into four blocks: Grammar and Practice, Vocabulary and Practice, Language Activities Centered on Reading Comprehension, and Language Activities Centered on Listening Comprehension. The block structure has the following advantages:
(1) The objectives of teaching activities are clear, making instruction more focused.
(2) Each grammar or vocabulary item is immediately followed by exercises, providing highly targeted training and facilitating classroom organization.
3. Student-centered classroom teaching: Adhering to the teaching philosophy of student-centeredness, all exercises require students to engage in paired or group activities in class. The textbook advocates that teachers guide students' language practice while opposing the traditional one-on-one (teacher vs. student) teaching model. Teachers provide collective guidance on language points, while all language activities are carried out autonomously by students.
4. Emphasis on independent learning after class: The teacher's manual of this textbook not only includes answers to exercises and translations of main texts but also provides detailed grammar supplements and teaching suggestions, allowing teachers to focus more on teaching organization. Considering the lack of resources among university French teachers, the teacher's manual contains abundant background materials. To give teachers more autonomy, these sections are written in French. The guiding principle of this textbook is always independent learning by students. The post-class reading section is only checked by teachers without in-class explanations, and autonomous listening is entirely completed by students after class.
