Distinguishing and Translating Synonymous and Near-Synonymous Terms in Legal English

Publishing Date: 2003-01-01
Features: This book aims to use concise language and methods to differentiate between some common synonymous or near-synonymous legal terms, helping readers quickly understand the differences in legal language, with the hope of contributing a small part to elevating the level of legal translation work in China. The reasons for translators' confusion over synonymous or near-synonymous legal terms are varied. Some errors are caused by literal translations, such as "Final judgment," where the translator arbitrarily assumed it should be translated as "final judgment," leading to the perpetuation of this mistake. As a result, almost all English-Chinese or Chinese-English dictionaries followed suit, completely disregarding or being unaware of the vast difference between it and the true "final judgment," i.e., the "judgment of last resort."
