This is a textbook for the College English Department in China, compiled for teaching purposes. Chinese university students learning English often face difficulties in reading English publications and interacting with people from English-speaking countries due to a lack of knowledge about European culture. English is filled with countless allusions, famous quotes, idioms, names of people, places, etc., derived from ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, literature, and history, the Hebrew Bible, artistic creations of the Renaissance, or significant events and figures related to the thoughts, science, politics, and society of each period. If one has little knowledge of these, understanding texts may be challenging, and conversations may also be difficult. However, once one has more knowledge of these topics, not only will comprehension improve, but language learning will also become better through cultural immersion.
