Features: Yu Ying-shih, born in Qianshan, Anhui, in 1930, in Tianjin. He studied at the New Asia College and New Asia Institute of Research in Hong Kong from 1950 to 1955, under the tutelage of Mr. Qian Mu. From 1956 to 1961, he studied at Harvard University, under the tutelage of Mr. Yang Lian, and obtained his Ph.D. He has served as a professor at the University of Michigan, Harvard University, and Yale University, as well as the president of New Asia College and the vice president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a visiting professor at Princeton University. He currently resides in the United States. Chinese history and culture is a vast and fertile field. The author primarily focuses on the culture and thought of the 19th and 20th centuries, treating them as an extension of traditional Chinese studies. This book mainly collects 18 representative essays by the author from 1956 to 2003. The last essay, On the Rebirth of Chinese Humanistic Studies, is a new work from 2003, offering important perspectives on the study of Chinese cultural tradition now and in the future.
