Features: After Japanese major students in higher education have studied a certain number of modern literary works, they need systematic and to deepen their understanding. Therefore, it is necessary to offer a Japanese-taught course on the History of Modern Japanese Literature for senior students of Japanese Language and Literature. This book is a textbook for the History of Modern Japanese Literature used by senior Japanese major students at Shanghai International Studies University. It systematically and concisely introduces the major literary schools, literary magazines, writers, and representative works of Japanese fiction, criticism, drama, and poetry from the Meiji Restoration to the 1960s, combining the historical context and key issues of the era. To help students vividly understand the creative styles of representative writers, classic works from the literary history are excerpted and included in this textbook. Citations from works published before 1945 are written in old kana, enabling students to gain familiarity through study. Each chapter includes necessary annotations, and a concise summary of the history of modern literature is provided at the end of the book, along with important discussion questions. This textbook is primarily based on the following publications: [History of Japanese Literature] (New Edition) and [Guidance and Practice of Middle Japanese Literature] published by Meiji Shobo, [History of Modern Japanese Literature—Research on Modern Literary Education] (Revised Edition) by Wangan Shuppan, [History of Japanese Literature] by Oogisha, [Annotated History of Japanese Literature] (Seventh Revised Edition) by Central Book Company, as well as some relevant literary reference books. During the writing process, the author received guidance and assistance from Professor Zhou Ping of Shanghai International Studies University and Japanese scholars at the university. The manuscript was also carefully reviewed by Professor Su Dechang of Fudan University and Associate Professor Sun Zongming of Shanghai International Studies University. The author extends heartfelt gratitude to all of them. This textbook was first published in early 1992 and revised in 2002. The author sincerely welcomes any criticism or corrections regarding the errors or shortcomings of this textbook.
