Since the reform and opening-up, China's power industry has developed the most rapidly among all industrial sectors. Major power grids have covered all urban areas and most rural areas nationwide. China ranks second in the world in both installed power generation capacity and power generation volume. The power industry in China has entered a new era characterized by large-scale units, large power plants, large grids, ultra-high voltage, and automation. However, with the continuous development of the economy and the improvement of people's living standards, especially after China joined the WTO, domestic power supply has become increasingly tight. The existing installed power generation capacity and output can no longer meet the needs of modernization, urgently requiring a new leap forward. The rise of the power industry will depend on a large number of high-quality, skilled, and English-proficient power science and technology talents. So, what are the requirements for the English proficiency of technical talents in the power industry? Clearly, CET-4 and CET-6 certificates do not reflect the actual English application skills of certificate holders. We believe that being proficient in English means being able to engage in comprehensive activities such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Being proficient in English means being able to freely communicate with foreign peers in business negotiations and academic exchanges, discussing various aspects of power plant construction, power generation, transmission, and sales. Being proficient in English means being able to write papers, reports, and letters in standardized English. Clearly, the current training models and English textbooks are no longer suitable for cultivating the new-generation power science and technology talents. Therefore, we must begin a new round of educational reform. Our goal is to fundamentally improve the foreign language proficiency of graduates from power colleges, enabling them to fully utilize their foreign language advantages and secure a place in the power talent market in the future.
With a 60-year history, Shanghai University of Electric Power is the cradle for cultivating power science and technology workers and urgently needed talents for the power system. To train more compound talents who can align with international power industry standards, we have organized English experts and scholars to meticulously compile a new series of power English textbooks covering listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, encompassing all aspects of the power industry.
