Features: Dr. John H. Watson welcomes the telephone into 221B Baker Street—after all, it will create wonders for his social life. Sherlock Holmes, however, is less certain, as he feels the telephone ring is somewhat an ill omen. The summer in London is very hot, and Watson is tired of the heat and crowds, so he sets off to a country estate to relax for two or three weeks. The other guests are all writers and artists, well-educated, and travel extensively—they are in the same world as Watson. However, it is discovered that one of the guests is tragically murdered beside the newly installed telephone, thus ending Watson's vacation—and seemingly confirming all of Holmes's suspicions. The victim is quite likable. It seems there is no apparent motive for murder. When Holmes investigates, past scandals, past enemies, and past hatreds begin to surface. What has Holmes missed? Perhaps this is a case of mistaken identity? Who was the victim trying to call?
