Features: The pipa possesses extremely rich expressive capabilities. When used as a solo instrument, it is emotionally resonant and beloved, with vivid descriptions found in historical records throughout the ages. The pipa is also frequently used in ensemble performances. As an accompanying instrument, it commonly appears in various local operas and storytelling traditions. In modern times, it is often featured in pipa duets and performances with folk orchestras and sound orchestras. The pipa now employs a semitone arrangement of the twelve-tone equal temperament system on its bridges, allowing it to play both traditional classical pieces and new compositions in various modes; it can perform Chinese harmonies as well as Western chords. It is versatile—able to be both ancient and modern, Chinese and Western, artistic and martial, refined and popular. Although learning the pipa is initially more challenging than other instruments, its rich expressive capabilities have attracted even more learners.
