Features: The development history of ancient Chinese jade artifacts is long and profound. Eight thousand years ago, exquisite jade ornaments from the Xinglongwa culture in the Liao River Basin have been treasured for generations. Four to five thousand years ago, ritual jade artifacts from the Hongshan and Liangzhu cultures imbued jade with a mysterious religious significance. Two to three thousand years ago, emperors and nobles of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties used jade to signify rank, identity, and the moral character of gentlemen, and even employed jade in burials. A thousand years ago, during the Tang and Song dynasties, jade gradually shed its mystical aura and entered the marketplace, becoming accessible to the common people. Three hundred years ago, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty paid great attention to the material of jade, taking the craftsmanship, decorative motifs, and forms of jade artifacts to an unprecedented height, leaving later generations in awe. Jade has accompanied the history and development of China, continuing into the new millennium. At the same time, literature on jade, its culture, research, and appreciation has been abundant throughout history. Today, articles, books, and illustrated catalogs on jade are countless. Some interpret the meaning and culture of jade, while others conduct period-specific or category-focused research, or present visual and textual analyses. The author of this book, however, takes a unique approach by combining the culture, research, and appreciation of ancient jade artifacts. Through 80 short essays, he elaborates on the fundamental characteristics, key points of appreciation, historical and cultural background, and artistic value of jade artifacts. For example, in the essay "Jade Artifacts Unearthed from the Tomb of Shi Shengzu in Quzhou," the author first analyzes the features and carving techniques of seven jade artifacts unearthed from the tomb of Shi Shengzu during the Southern Song Dynasty, offering readers new insights into Southern Song jade artifacts. Shi Shengzu "held the official rank of Chaoyi Dafu and was dedicated to learning throughout his life, leaving behind a wealth of writings." The jade literary instruments unearthed from his tomb are consistent with the identity of the tomb owner, confirming his career as a scholar. In the final section, the author provides a brilliant discussion on the development of jade literary instruments: "The earliest jade literary instruments were found in the tomb of Fu Hao during the Shang Dynasty, including color mixing plates and grinding tools. The discovery of jade artifacts in Shi Shengzu's tomb from the Southern Song Dynasty indicates that a relatively series-specific category of literary instruments had begun to form and gradually occupied a place on the scholar's desk." In just a few sentences, he outlines the evolution of jade literary instruments, providing readers with a broader historical and cultural context for appreciating the artifacts unearthed from Shi Shengzu's tomb. Among the 80 essays, there are both comprehensive overviews of jade artifacts from specific eras and cultures, as well as thematic analyses of particular types of artifacts, creating a harmonious balance between the general and the specific. In the introductions to specific artifacts, the author often selects those with typical significance, offering reliable benchmarks for appreciating similar jade artifacts. The language throughout the book is clear, concise, well-structured, and substantive, making it an excellent guide for beginners while also benefiting researchers. The splendid and dazzling ancient jade artifacts have captivated people's hearts. Reading this book will add a touch of rationality to our appreciation and deepen our reflections when we marvel at them. This is both the author's hope and the consensus of the readers.
