Features:
This book primarily introduces methods for analyzing and designing power systems, enabling students to gain a clear understanding of a broad range of topics in power system engineering, especially by utilizing personal computers. It allows undergraduate students to fully comprehend the fundamental theories and methods of power systems and provides corresponding training. The main features of this book include:
1. For electrical engineering students, the content of this book is highly comprehensive, which is a distinguishing aspect of American textbooks compared to those in China. In China, the content is typically divided into several separate textbooks, such as Power System Analysis, Power Engineering, and Fundamentals of Electric Energy Systems, none of which are as comprehensive as this book.
2. The content is up-to-date. This is the 3rd edition, reflecting the latest issues and research findings in the field of power systems, including some problems in power systems under a market environment.
3. Each chapter begins with a Case Study section, introducing relevant historical background, latest advancements, and posing some questions. For example, the Case Study for Chapter 6, "Power Flow," provides a brief history of the development of visualized power grids and power flow research and calculation. Visualized power grids are latest research achievements and represent the future direction of power system power flow calculation and research. Issues such as power flow management, network control, line congestion in a power market environment, three-dimensional network graphs, and market power are all very new. The Case Study for Chapter 13, "Transient Stability," discusses the major blackout in the United States, which helps students better understand the significance of this course and greatly stimulates their interest in learning.
4. The book comes with a CD-ROM containing the PowerWorld Simulator. PowerWorld Simulator is an excellent software package capable of handling power systems of any scale and is widely used in universities, companies, government agencies, and power market professionals. The CD integrates computational examples, problems, and course projects on this platform, which is very helpful for students in learning and understanding concepts and methods.
5. Each chapter includes a wealth of exercises and problems to assist students in understanding the course content and fundamental concepts. In particular, the book also includes 6 course projects (Design Project), such as "Designing Power System Planning" and "Power Flow/S Research," which students can complete with the help of PowerWorld Simulator. In China, the design component is often omitted in teaching, yet it is actually very important for university students. The design content in this book is worth for Chinese teaching. Both authors of this book are from Northeastern University in the United States, a university with strong teaching and research in power systems. While writing this book, the authors also incorporated teaching achievements from other institutions. This book is suitable as a bilingual teaching textbook for undergraduate students in power systems or electrical engineering, as well as for related majors in electromechanical engineering, and can also serve as a reference for graduate students or electrical engineers in related fields.
