A touch of primitive, a touch of romance, a touch of passion, a touch of loneliness, a touch of elegance, a touch of ruggedness—Qianzhoushan’s towering mountains hold layers of meaning, and layers of meaning hold layers of temptation. All of this comes from the Miao and Dong ethnic groups who have lived here for thousands of years. During the journey, what changes are the appearance of the drum towers and the attire of the people, while what remains eternal are the traditions passed down through generations. The people here may seem quiet in their daily lives, but when festivals arrive, they sing grand songs or flying songs, their melodies captivating listeners. The Miao people’s custom of playing the sheng and dancing under the moon is their own carnival, and their carnival is also the carnival of travelers. Whenever someone visits Qianzhoushan, no one will stand idly by or remain indifferent.
This book focuses on the cultural symbols of the Miao, Dong, and (Geng) ethnic groups in Qianzhoushan, including their clothing, architecture, festivals, and beliefs. It provides detailed descriptions of relevant attractions and travel routes, along with practical information gathered through field research. All of this will allow you to gradually get to know Qianzhoushan without leaving your home, and it will genuinely assist you during your travels. The book is printed on Dutch Montblanc paper, and both the text and images are original works from 2003–2004. We hope the weight of the book won’t add to your burden, and we also hope its content won’t make the reading experience dull.
