The book centers on "Lives and Friends Around Me" to recall important figures and events in modern Chinese literature. It offers a vivid and authentic account of the changes in modern literature, the formation of literary schools and groups, and provides unique evaluations of some writers and works. The author had extensive interactions with many famous scholars of the 20th-century Chinese literary scene, such as Liang Qichao, Chen Duxiu, Hu Shi, Lu Xun, and Chen Wangdao. The book reveals many little-known anecdotes of the literary world for the first time. With its unique structure and detailed historical records, it offers an invaluable sub-literary history for literary scholars and enthusiasts. In recent years, the topic of "Jiangnan" has garnered significant attention in the cultural circles. Indeed, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, the romantic atmosphere of Qinhuai River, the small bridges and flowing water, and the late Ming cultural traditions have left their imprint on later generations, whose lives still reflect, to some extent, the style, spirit, legacy, and influence of these bygone eras. In recent years, the author has deeply reflected on such issues and expressed and elaborated on them through the form of cultural essays. The book includes 21 such works, primarily divided into two categories based on their themes. The first category consists of humanistic landscapes and historical sites, such as "Immersing in Xiaoling Mausoleum," "Strolling Along the Qinhuai River," and "Ruined Walls of Ming Imperial Palace." In these reflections, the author does not merely indulge in nostalgic longing but also expresses concern for the inheritance and promotion of excellent classical culture, while sharply critiquing the destructive practices of destroying cultural relics or forging antiques in some places today. The second category focuses on historical artifacts, such as "The Solitary Wang Anshi," "Li Yu's Leisure," and "Taking Dong Qichang as a Model." Through the destinies of historical figures, the author candidly articulates his views on what intellectuals should uphold in terms of integrity, moral judgment, and principles of conduct and speech. Additionally, the book features two essays on Jiangnan's unique pleasure boats and purple clay pottery, which are also worth reading. The book is written with fresh prose and clear perspectives. Against the backdrop of history, many figures, events, and phenomena from Jiangnan's past are reexamined and reinterpreted, offering readers a unique reading experience through the author's distinctive insights.
