Tomorrow's Garden City

Author: (British) Howard/Chin King-chün
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-09-01
Features: Tomorrow's Town and Country has been reprinted six times in the UK, and each edition has attracted significant attention. This attention stems from humanity's concern for its own fate as it transitions from the urban era to the urban century. Cities have undeniable roles in promoting material civilization, cultural prosperity, and social progress. However, the prosperity and development of cities have also come at a high cost. This cost not only restricts humanity's growing pursuit of environmental and life quality but also hinders the healthy development of cities. The era in which Mr. Howard lived was a time when the Industrial Revolution in the UK drove rapid urbanization, as well as a period of frenzied capitalist expansion. Mr. Howard envisioned a future garden city as one where:
- Natural beauty – Clean water, smoke-free air, fresh air, and a harmonious blend of fields and cities;
- Social justice – No slums, equal social opportunities, and full employment;
- Harmony between urban and rural areas – Mutual interaction between urban prosperity and rural development replaces urban-rural separation.
Inspired by Tomorrow's Town and Country, the Garden City and Town Planning Association was founded in the UK in 1899, marking the beginning of the garden city movement, which has since become a global trend. Although Mr. Howard's garden city ideas carry some idealism, his book Tomorrow's Town and Country still leaves us a valuable spiritual legacy for our time. Reading this book, its realism needs no further elaboration. We believe that the return of to rationality will be an inevitable trend of this era.
