Features: Textbook development is the core of teaching reform. Offering general education courses in pedagogy in higher normal universities (institutes of education) is one of the fundamental measures to improve the quality of normal students (teachers in further education) and thereby adapt to the needs of teacher professional development. However, according to surveys from some universities, students generally lack interest in general education courses in pedagogy. One of the main reasons is that the textbooks are outdated and fail to keep pace with the times; the content is dull and fails to stimulate learning motivation; the subject-centered ideology is too strong, detached from students' actual situations and the needs of social development. Therefore, whether it is possible to compile an excellent general education course textbook that is well-received by students and teachers is an urgent task in the teaching reform of general education in pedagogy. A preliminary outline and format for the compilation of "Fundamentals of Pedagogy" were drafted. After the meeting, based on extensive feedback from experts and scholars, the outline and format were repeatedly revised and improved to strive for a novel textbook system, a reasonable structure, and content that fully reflects the characteristics of the times and the advantages of similar textbooks abroad. The scientificity, research nature, applicability, practicality, and interest of the textbook are organically combined to help enhance the public image of the pedagogy discipline. "Fundamentals of Pedagogy" is jointly compiled by the twelve key normal universities in China and has been designated as a national-level planning textbook for general higher education under the "Tenth Five-Year Plan." It is the only textbook for general education in pedagogy. The book consists of 12 chapters: Education and Pedagogy, Educational Functions, Educational Aims, Educational Systems, Teachers and Students, Curriculum, Classroom Teaching, School Education and Student Life, Class Management and Head Teacher Work, Student Evaluation, Teachers' Educational Research, and Educational Reform and Development. Each chapter of the book adopts a comprehensive compilation format, such as [Content Summary], [Learning Objectives], [Keywords], [Key Conclusions and Implications], [Learning Evaluation], [Academic Trends], and [References], aiming to align with students' learning patterns and teachers' teaching practices. The book has a reasonable structure, content that fully reflects the characteristics of the times and the advantages of similar textbooks abroad, highlights the scientificity and research nature of the textbook, and emphasizes the application, practicality, and interest of theory, with a focus on enhancing the public image of the pedagogy discipline. The book can not only serve as a general education textbook for students in higher normal universities but also as a textbook for secondary and primary school teachers receiving continuing education in various educational institutes and teacher training schools, as well as for students in graduate courses and correspondence courses in pedagogy.
