Features: Paul Baran's Political Economy of Growth was published in the United States in 1957 and was republished multiple times in 1973, 1976, and 1978. It is a major representative of the radical school in economics within the United States and is widely recognized as an important Marxist work in the West, with broad social influence. It has been translated into multiple languages and disseminated worldwide. Now, we introduce this Chinese translation to Chinese readers, which is undoubtedly very beneficial for understanding Marxist research abroad. Paul Baran was born in Nikolaev on the Black Sea coast, with Polish ancestry. He received his education in Germany and the former Soviet Union; he attended the Plekhanov Economic Institute in Moscow and immigrated to the United States in 1939, earning his master's degree from Harvard University in 1941. After serving in the military during the war, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for a period of time before joining Stanford University as a professor in 1949, where he remained until his death in 1964. In addition to this book, Baran co-authored Monopoly Capital with Sweezy. Like this book, Monopoly Capital has also been translated into multiple languages and widely disseminated, exerting significant social influence. This work was translated into Chinese and published in China before the present book. Political Economy of Growth focuses on the operation and development of the economy and is a representative work of the radical school in Western development economics. Unlike the currently popular structuralist and neoclassical schools that defend the existing capitalist system, the radical school, represented by Baran, adopts a critical stance toward modern capitalism and argues for the necessity of establishing a socialist system.
