Features: The commoner Julien Sorel, driven by an inflated sense of personal ambition, is determined to rise above his station. With the advantage of a fine education and his own wit, he navigates high society, turning the battlefield of love into a stage for revenge against the nobility's disdain. By winning the affections of Madame de Rênal and the Marchioness de la Mole, he satisfies his unquenchable thirst for vanity and self-respect in the social circles where he cannot otherwise find fulfillment. Through his relationships with these two noblewomen, Julien not only earns the honor of joining the royal guard but also secures an annual income of over 20,000 francs, the rank of a lieutenant in the light cavalry, and the noble title of Chevalier de la Varenne. However, just as he reaches the pinnacle of his success, a letter of betrayal from Madame de Rênal, written out of desperation, seals his promising future. After the gunshot in the church, Madame de Rênal falls to Julien's gun. Thus, Julien's death elevates his personal heroism to its zenith. Through the character of Julien, Stendhal masterfully portrays the intense conflicts and struggles between the middle and lower bourgeoisie and the feudal aristocracy in the years leading up to the July Revolution in France, as well as their fearless spirit in seeking personal liberation and realizing their own worth. The title of the novel carries profound symbolism—the "red" represents revolution, freedom, and equality, while the "black" signifies the dark forces of the feudal aristocracy and the church, also symbolizing Julien's life-and-death gamble in the game of life. With his delicate and exquisite prose, Stendhal vividly depicts the deep inner workings of the protagonist, Julien, pioneering the genre of the "psychological novel." The Red and the Black is undeniably an immortal masterpiece in the treasure trove of world literature.
