In 1929, he joined the Communist Party of China. During the War of Liberation, he served as the chairman of the Peasants' Union of Pingjiang County, the deputy secretary of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the CCP and chairman of the Peasants' Union, the political director of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Military Region, and the secretary of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the CCP, concurrently serving as the political commissar of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Military Region. He participated in the three-year guerrilla war in the south. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he served as the division commander of the First Brigade of the New Fourth Army, the deputy commander and commander political commissar of the First Brigade, and the deputy commander of the seventh division of the New Fourth Army. During the War of Liberation, he served as the political commissar of the Lu'an Military Region, the secretary of the Lu'an Provincial Committee of the CCP, the commander of the Lu'nan Military Region, the director of the committee and the commander of the logistics department of the East China Forward Line, the deputy secretary of the Shandong Provincial Committee of the CCP, and the deputy political commissar of the Shandong Military Region. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the deputy commander of the Shandong Military Region, the secretary of the Central Demobilization Commission, the director of the People's Armed Forces Department of the Central Military Commission, the director of the Logistics Department of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, the deputy director of the People's Armed Forces Department of the Central Military Commission, and the advisor to the General Staff. In 1955, he was awarded the rank of General. He was a member of the Defense Committee of the second and third National People's Congresses, a representative of the second and third National People's Congresses, and a standing committee member of the fourth and fifth National People's Congresses. He was a representative of the seventh and eighth national conferences of the CCP. At the 11th Plenary Session of the CCP Central Committee, he was elected as a standing committee member of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.
