Features: Human body photography was once a taboo subject in Chinese photography. Nudity and sensual beauty were issues that cameras had to avoid. Once a photographer took human body photos, they had to be extra careful during development to avoid being reported to the police as troublemakers. As the era progressed to the late 1990s, photography magazines, journals, and various levels of photography competitions allowed for more frequent displays of human body photography. However, the phrase "human body photography without faces" vividly illustrates the immense social pressure photographers had to endure when shooting such images. Human body photography that expresses human emotions and desires is not just an issue within the photography community but also a broader social issue. Today, the two volumes presented to us contain over 400 photographs, divided into two themes: "Human Body and Nature" and "Sensual and Emotional." They represent a comprehensive and authentic display of Chinese human body photography entering the 21st century. We see a rich, vibrant, and passionate state of human body photography, featuring Chinese models with relatively free creations that no longer deliberately avoid faces or conceal certain body parts. Human body photography has truly become a genre of photography, much like landscape, still-life, and portrait photography. Whether professional or amateur, photographers who are passionate about exploring human body photography can now openly shoot, publish, and engage in natural exchanges with the public. Human body photography has finally emerged from the undercurrent, flowing forward as a branch of photography, strong and unstoppable. From the richness and diversity of creative techniques, we can see the development of Chinese human body photography in the 21st century.
Volume 1, "Human Body and Nature," showcases the earth that nurtures all things. Mountains and rivers are full of vitality, and when the sincerity, simplicity, and desire of the naked body blend into the vibrant four seasons of the land, the Great Wall, the Yellow River, the desert, the grasslands, and the sea all take on new meanings. In this volume, we can see almost all of China's important natural landscapes, demonstrating how photographers actively utilized their existing photographic resources and capabilities. Human body photography in natural environments requires a harmonious integration of the scenery and the human form.
Volume 2, "Sensual and Emotional," pushes human body photography to even deeper and broader realms. In the images, human emotions are expressed not only through facial expressions but also through body language. The gentleness of women and the strength of men are conveyed through the curves and structures of body lines and volumes. The presentation of the naked body makes the body language more pure and intense. "Nudity is the best material to evoke a longing for freedom, a return to purity, and a reflection on life." Human body photographers strive to infuse their bodily awareness with the consciousness of the times, extracting the essence of life. Presenting humanity itself as a cultural phenomenon, bare and unadorned in artistic works, is one of the important signs of human civilization's progress. Human body photography, at a higher level, showcases the inner spirit and the freedom of the human soul.
