He has directed eight films, including Hana-bi (Flowers), which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival. He has written eight novels and six essays. He has held one art exhibition and records seven television programs every week. In the late hours of August 1994, while riding a heavy motorcycle, he was involved in a severe accident that damaged his facial nerves and nerves. His elderly mother heard the news and yelled, "If you were going to crash, at least crash a better car!"
