Features: The Xi'an Incident has been over sixty years since it occurred. On December 12, 1936, to save the nation and the people from peril, Generals Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng led the Northeast Army and the Seventeenth Route Army to launch a bold coup in Xi'an with the spirit of "willing to risk everything to depose the emperor." This act swiftly expanded the united front situation in the northwest to the entire nation. The Xi'an Incident was a great turning point in modern Chinese history. As Snow said, it "achieved a great leap forward in the vast canyon of history" and staged a "thrilling drama." Today, as we revisit this history, we deeply feel that the occurrence of the Xi'an Incident fully reflects the patriotic spirit and heroic of the Chinese nation. It is something worth commemorating forever. The Chinese nation is one with a long-standing culture, and an important pillar of this culture is the tradition of patriotism. Although the Xi'an Incident was sudden, it had historical inevitability. As the national crisis grew increasingly severe, the Communist Party of China published the "August 1 Manifesto," calling for national unity to "stop the civil war and fight the foreign enemy," which strongly advanced the movement for national salvation. Zhang and Yang, the two generals, though with different life experiences, came together on the fundamental issue of uniting with the Communists to resist Japan. For the sake of the nation and the people, they did not hesitate to sacrifice their own interests and even their lives. The patriotic spirit of these two generals was a continuation and promotion of the fine traditions of Chinese history. In his notes on the "Records of the Grand Historian," Comrade Mao Zedong once wrote: "Yue Fei, Wen Tianxiang, Zeng Jing, Dai Mingshi, Qu Qiubai, Fang Zhimin, Deng Yanda, Yang Hucheng, Wen Yiduo, and others, who died for their ideals, were not great enough? They can be called 'broad-minded and selfless, ever striving for progress.'" Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng were indeed the "eternal heroes" praised by the people. The Xi'an Incident was ultimately resolved peacefully, leading to the formation of the national united front against Japan, which was also a full embodiment of the patriotic spirit. After the incident, the key question before the people was whether to seek peace, whether to fight, whether to release Jiang Jieshi under certain conditions, or without conditions. On this issue, both the Communist Party of China, the Northeast Army, and the Seventeenth Route Army unanimously advocated for a peaceful resolution and the release of Jiang Jieshi under the condition of resisting Japan together. Although the resolution process of the incident was full of twists and turns, due to significant compromises and sacrifices from all three parties, the result was an unprecedented peaceful unification of the entire nation. For this, the Communist Party "changed the name of the Soviet Union and the Red Army, abolished its opposition to the Kuomintang, and stopped confiscating landlords' land"; the main figures behind the incident, Generals Zhang and Yang, sacrificed their status, interests, freedom, and even their lives for the sake of the nation; and the Nanjing authorities ultimately abandoned their policy of suppressing the Communists, willing to achieve the second cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party through formal negotiations. It is undeniable that it was precisely because all aspects of Chinese society made、 after the incident that laid the foundation for the national resistance against Japan and the revival of the Chinese nation. It is worth emphasizing that the Communist Party of China, at this critical moment for the nation's fate, once again demonstrated its broad-mindedness and farsightedness. Especially Comrade Zhou Enlai, who played a significant role in peacefully resolving the incident. With the foresight of a great statesman, he skillfullyed the complex contradictions among various parties, cleverly utilizing the "trinity" anti-Japanese framework already established between the Red Army, the Northeast Army, and the Seventeenth Route Army, and proposed the "six demands" in negotiations with the Nanjing government, ultimately securing Jiang Jieshi's promise to stop suppressing the Communists and resist Japan together. As Comrade Ye Jianying's poem praises: "Capturing Jiang Jieshi in Xi'an reversed the perilous situation, turning the civil war song into an anti-Japanese poem." The outstanding contributions of Generals Zhang and Yang in achieving the historical turning point, as well as their spirit of sacrificing the local for the greater good, fully embody the patriotic spirit and heroic of the Chinese nation. Driven by patriotic sincerity and benevolent intentions, they followed the trend and turned the tide. Their fate was tragic—one family of four perished, and the other was imprisoned for 55 years before gaining freedom. This personal historical tragedy only adds to the glory of their status as "eternal heroes." The significant sacrifices they made for the nation and the people were worthwhile. The patriotic spirit and heroic they demonstrated represent the great character of the Chinese nation, the noble righteousness of the Chinese nation, and the true backbone of the Chinese nation. Although the Xi'an Incident has been over sixty years, the brilliance it radiated in modern Chinese history is irreplaceable. Even today, it still leaves us with many valuable lessons and inspirations. It once again shows that the development of history is not controlled or reversed by the subjective wishes of individuals, but rather the trend of public opinion always guides the overall direction of social progress. This incident also demonstrates that the Chinese nation is one that refuses to be humbled. In the face of severe disasters, strong patriotism can break down class barriers or conflicts, uniting the entire nation in solidarity to resist foreign aggression. The patriotic sentiment of the vast majority of the Chinese people is the soul of the Chinese nation. Any foreign aggressor, when faced with this self-reliant and resilient nation, will inevitably fall into the quagmire of failure. Patriotism has always been the spiritual pillar of the Chinese nation, with a splendid culture and fine traditions, and it will forever be the solid foundation for all descendants of Yan and Huang to stand tall among the nations of the world. The great spirit of patriotism will forever inspire us to move forward!
