Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was one of Denmark's most famous writers. He was born into a poor shoemaker family in ?sterbro, central Denmark, and attended a charity school in his early years, working as an apprentice. As a young man, Andersen dreamed of becoming a singer, actor, and playwright. In 1829, he entered the University of Copenhagen to study. His first collection of fairy tales, Stories for Children, was published in 1835. Throughout his life, he wrote over 160 fairy tales. Andersen lived a life of frustration and was not recognized during his lifetime, but as his works became better known, they began to spread worldwide.
