Cai Hanxun's book "Cultural Rebel · Li Ao," originally planned for his 60th birthday on April 25th, was delayed until May because it was decided at the last minute to include birthday wishes from his friends and family. The book is titled "Cultural Rebel" primarily to commemorate Li Ao's return to the literary scene in 1979. At that time, while I was the editor-in-chief of University Magazine, I had a column called "Portrait of Writers" where I discussed with the novelist Lady Liao Huixing the new nickname that Li Ao should receive. It was decided that he should transition from the "Cultural Guardian" of the Wenxing era to being called a "Cultural Rebel." After much brainstorming, we settled on the name "Cultural Rebel" and also commissioned the renowned painter Wu Yaozhong to sketch a side view of Li Ao during his "farewell to the literary world."
Now, 16 years have passed in the blink of an eye. When Li Ao returned to the literary scene, he was "distant and unapproachable." Later, through chance encounters, we became closer, and the "almost narcissistic" facade he presented to the outside world gradually faded. However, this "Cultural Rebel," who seems to have been born in the wrong era, has been somewhat altered by the media in the Chinese-speaking world. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to help a wider readership recognize the neglected side of Li Ao. We hope that through this book, people can catch a glimpse of the true face of "Cultural Rebel · Li Ao."
