The "Table 1" listed in the "Outline for the Mandarin Proficiency Test" contains 8,454 exam vocabulary words, while "Table 2" contains 15,467, totaling 23,921. Calculating the average length of each word as two characters, there are approximately 47,842 characters in total, which is a large number. Mastering them one by one is indeed quite challenging. To address this, we conducted a computer analysis of the 23,921 exam vocabulary words and found that there are only 4,536 unique characters. This shows that we do not need to master the pronunciation of all 23,921 exam words, which is already insufficient. Based on the requirements of the Mandarin pronunciation exam, we classified and summarized the 4,536 characters into various tables needed for the exam. For example, we counted the frequency of occurrence of these 4,536 single characters in 232,921 exam vocabulary words and created a frequency table to understand the probability of each character appearing in the exam. This can also help you determine the range of characters to master based on your needs.
