Features: The term originated in the folk culture during the Sui and early Tang periods. In the mid-Tang and late Tang, literati's contributions to Ci poetry emerged, and it further developed during the late Tang and Five Dynasties period. The Song Dynasty marked the golden age of Ci poetry. The flourishing of Ci during the Five Dynasties was closely related to the specific social, historical, and literary developments of the Song era. After the establishment of the Song Dynasty, a period of recovery and economic growth followed, leading to an expanding cultural and recreational demand among officials, scholars, and the general public. Ci became a popular form for entertaining guests and passing leisure time, resulting in a surge in its creation. In the early Northern Song period, the works of, , , , and others still followed the Ci style of the Five Dynasties and Southern Tang, serving as a transitional phase from the Tang to the Song. Although Fan Zhongyan wrote relatively few Ci poems, his works were full of heroic and tragic sentiments, setting a unique tone in the early Song Ci scene and pioneering the bold and unrestrained style of Ci. Liu Yong opened up a new chapter for the development of Song Ci, exerting a profound influence on later generations of Ci poets. Liu Yong created a large number of slow Ci, providing a new form that could accommodate more content for future poets. He not only wrote about the parting and longing of men and women but also explored themes such as journeys, urban landscapes, and natural scenery, broadening the subject matter of Ci. Liu's Ci masterfully employed narrative and descriptive techniques, with simple and accessible language, enhancing the expressive skills of the form.
