Publish Date: 1997-12-01
Features: The interpreting techniques elaborated in this book are a summary of the author's own experience gained through training in simultaneous interpreting for the European Community and practical teaching and interpreting practice. Most of the interpreting exercises cited are selected from the classroom exercises of English majors at the International Business Foreign Languages Department of Shanghai International Trade College and the materials accumulated by the author in daily interpreting practice. The appendix at the end of the book provides a summary of commonly used country names, international organization names, and frequently used English abbreviations. Therefore, this book can not only serve as a textbook but also be an ideal reference for self-study in English-Chinese interpreting. The content of the book is arranged from simple to complex. In addition to an overview of interpreting, it is divided into three main parts: daily work interpreting, conference and negotiation interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting and others. The first part introduces methods for improving memory through a large number of examples such as welcoming guests, sightseeing, and tourism, supplemented by necessary interpreting exercises. The second part elaborates on interpreting in formal settings such as conferences and negotiations, focusing on interpreting note-taking techniques. It is accompanied by interpreting exercises for different occasions such as business negotiations, seminars, and press conferences to train and improve students' ad-lib translation skills. The third part covers simultaneous interpreting techniques and the issues interpreters should pay attention to during the interpreting process. The reference answers to the interpreting exercises in the book are provided as the fourth part for readers' reference.
