Features: This book is designed to help students better prepare for the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6), strengthen their English listening and speaking skills, and thereby improve their language proficiency. The main body of the book is divided into two parts: Part 1—Listening Training; Part 2—Speaking Training. Additionally, there is an appendix, which includes: the College English Test Band 6 Speaking Language Functions and Notions Chart, and the listening scripts and answers for the synchronous exercises.
Unit 6 Listening 1. Overview of the Test 1) Overview of the CET-6 Listening Test The CET-6 is a higher-level requirement in the foundational stage of college English. Students preparing for the CET-6 test have generally passed the CET-4 and possess a certain foundation in English. However, many candidates still experience "shock upon hearing" when it comes to the Part 1—Listening Comprehension of the CET-6: fleeting auditory materials, understanding only the sound but not the meaning, or grasping the meaning but forgetting the content, all leading to confusion and frustration. So, how can one elevate their listening skills to the next level and successfully pass the CET-6 listening section? The first half of this book provides a detailed description of the various question types, question-setting methods, and answer strategies in the CET-6 listening test. It specifically analyzes the difficulties candidates are likely to encounter during the listening comprehension process, while also offering a wealth of supplementary exercises and mock tests to solidly build their foundation. This not only helps candidates pass the CET-6 listening test smoothly but also fundamentally improves their listening skills, thereby consolidating and enhancing other skills such as reading, writing, and speaking, and promoting overall English proficiency.
The Revised College English Teaching Syllabus requires students, upon completing the foundational stage, to be able to grasp the main idea, identify key points and relevant details, and understand the speaker's perspective and attitude in longer conversations, talks, reports, and lectures on familiar topics with relatively simple sentence structures, minimal unfamiliar vocabulary, and a speaking speed of 150–170 words per minute. The significant difference between the old and new syllabi in terms of listening requirements lies in the speaking speed: the old syllabus specified a speed of 140 words per minute, while the new syllabus has raised it to 150–170 words per minute.
Let's take a look at the main differences between the CET-6 listening test and the CET-4 listening test: The CET-6 listening materials are more challenging and broader in scope than the CET-4, involving a larger vocabulary (4,200 words for CET-4, 5,500 words for CET-6), more information, richer content, and a faster speaking speed (130–150 words per minute for CET-4, 150–170 words per minute for CET-6). This demands candidates to have a broader knowledge base, a larger vocabulary, and stronger abilities in comprehension, summarization, and analysis.
