Features: The original intention of the "New Perspectives" design series is to capture the subtle changes of these new transformations from different "perspectives," against the backdrop of the times and from the cultural level that directly influences design fashion. "New" is our criterion; "New" refers to new concepts, new thinking, and new trends. For each "perspective," we do not aim for grandeur or comprehensiveness; instead, we strive for being small, refined, and profound, which is an extremely difficult task and requires continuous effort. We may not be able to depict a clear picture for readers at every level, but we hope to outline a general framework, provide readers with a line of thought, showcase a new mental space, leave some inspiration, and spark a bit of creativity. That would already be the original purpose of the "Design New Perspectives" series. We hope to achieve this and do even better.
Focusing on an irregular theoretical level and depth is a key aspect of the series, while showcasing a moderate number of successful design examples from around the world is another. The goal is to use vivid and intuitive visuals to substantiate the concepts and viewpoints presented in the books, while also highlighting the styles of creative expression from specific historical periods and certain new creative approaches, providing readers with an intuitive visual experience and leaving them with space for reflection and appreciation.
Cultural connotation is the lifeblood of design. The relatively underdeveloped Chinese design industry and design education, in particular, need the nourishment of culture, theoretical support, and conceptual exchange. Only in this way can we catch up with the pace of the times and leverage our traditional cultural advantages to present a brand-new face of Chinese design culture in the 21st century.
Since album cover design offers a wide range of themes, diverse expressive forms, great freedom of artistic imagination, and broad creative space, and given my belief that an outstanding graphic designer must possess a certain level of musical appreciation, in the early 1980s, I incorporated music album cover design and concert performance posters into the design curriculum by integrating the appreciation of Western and Chinese classical music. This approach was highly favored by the students. With great enthusiasm, they immersed themselves in the pursuit of the aesthetic beauty of musical imagery, creating numerous album covers with artistic charm. These works, with rich imagination and distinctive artistic expression, were praised by the audience and played a positive role in enhancing students' creative thinking and inspiring their artistic potential.
The purpose of compiling this book is not to introduce music appreciation—that is the duty of musicians and music critics, and something beyond my capabilities. Instead, I aim to open a window for readers to appreciate the art of music album cover design, showcasing a new world of musical imagery as the soulful expression and emotional confession of musicians. Integrating the world of music into our design lives will make the design journey more engaging and inspiring.
