Features: The Novel Monthly was founded in 1980. It is the earliest-established and highest-circulated literary selection magazine in China (its peak monthly circulation once reached 1.8 million copies, still ranking first among all literary journals in China in terms of circulation), and is beloved by readers across various strata both domestically and abroad. Nearly all the renowned works of emerging mid-to-young writers during the New Period have gained national recognition through the timely selection, curation, and promotion by The Novel Monthly, creating one literary sensation after another. As a selection magazine, The Novel Monthly has consistently maintained its distinctive features: selecting quickly, accurately, and with precision, while also embracing diversity. It particularly focuses on publishing works that are close to reality, in tune with the pulse of the times, have a high moral tone, and possess strong ideological and artistic qualities. This ensures that the magazine is both substantial and rich in variety, catering to the reading and appreciation needs of the readers while also serving the research and appreciation needs of scholars and experts. The Novel Monthly 2003 Best Works Collection is the third collection published by the editorial team of the magazine, following the "Annual Best Works Collection of The Novel Monthly" in 2001 and 2002. It is compiled from 46 selected middle-length stories and 69 short stories published in the magazine in 2003. After a thorough re-reading and repeated comparison and selection based on multiple aspects of the works—such as their ideological and artistic merits—the editorial team ultimately chose 9 middle-length stories and 11 short stories for inclusion. This represents the cream of the crop, truly a collection of the finest middle-length and short stories from mainland China in 2003, thereby enhancing the book's value for reading, appreciation, research, and collection.
