Features: This book was written as part of the funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1982 for Roanna Reed Costello. Thanks to her dedicated group of students and colleagues, the book was finally published. It was designed by Tucker Viemeister and Seth Cohenfeld, of course, with some modifications by her as well. Design Elements is a reference book for students and designers to learn from. As an introductory text on design, it includes methods for creating various simple forms and complex approaches to solving difficult design problems. As a comprehensive discussion of the practical relationships within design, it enables readers to better understand three-dimensional design. Roanna Reed Costello taught "Industrial Design" at Pratt Institute for 50 years, where she developed this learning curriculum, which has become the foundation for design education worldwide. This curriculum, along with her foundational exercises on the abstract visual composition characteristics, became her lifelong pursuit. The students she trained, as well as the students of her students, have completely transformed the face of American design.
