Features: Calligraphy is not only aesthetically pleasing in form and appearance but also a reflection of an individual's overall artistic achievement. Looking at the great calligraphers of past generations, some excelled in elegant lines, others in vigorous strokes, and some were renowned for their free and unrestrained structures. Therefore, compiling and publishing calligraphy books by categorizing them by script styles and collecting works by multiple artists is necessary, and so is compiling the works of great calligraphers in different scripts from different periods. This approach can provide materials for scholars and researchers, serve as models for calligraphy enthusiasts at various levels to study and practice, and allow a broad readership to enjoy the beauty of calligraphy without leaving their homes. This is the purpose and objective of compiling and publishing the series "Historical Masters of Calligraphy."
The long and rich history of calligraphy art in our great motherland has been written by masters such as Wang Xizhi, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Ou Yangzhen, and Zhao Mengfu. They left behind countless masterpieces of calligraphy for later generations, providing our editorial team with a vast selection for compiling "A Glimpse of Calligraphy by Historical Masters."
This series is grand in scale, starting with the "Sage of Calligraphy" Wang Xizhi, covering the Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, passing through the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and extending to the early Republic of China. It selects over fifty calligraphy masters of enduring fame, compiling their representative works and publishing them in chronological order.
This book includes Wang Xizhi's running script works such as "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion," "Copying the Thousand Characters of Zhong You," as well as his small regular script works like "On the Joy of War" and "The Yellow Court Classic," and his cursive script works such as "Wang's Strategy Letter" and "Seventeen Letters."
