Features: With the acceleration of the global economic development and China's official entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), China's economy will face new and greater development opportunities. The interactions between domestic enterprises or organizations and those from around the world will increase, and international creditor-debtor relationships will become more frequent. Additionally, the development of China's banking sector will face significant competitive pressure. In this context, domestic banks need to continuously adapt to the frequent changes and adopt appropriate measures to assist enterprises in clearing international creditor-debtor activities, thereby promoting the growth of their own business. This book was conceived in such a background after multiple rounds of deliberation by the author. It aims to adapt to the new trends of international economic development, comprehensively discuss the theories and operational aspects of international settlement, analyze the risks faced by relevant parties in the process, and propose corresponding preventive measures. This book is designed as a teaching material for higher education institutions and is divided into 12 chapters, covering topics such as international payment methods, negotiable instruments, bank guarantees and standby letters of credit, documents in international settlement, document review under letter of credit, claims and payments between international banks, trade financing in international settlement, risks and prevention in international trade settlement, and non-trade settlement. It systematically elaborates on the theories and practices of international settlement.
This book has the following features:
1. Rigorous Structure: In addition to discussing the settlement services function of banks, this book systematically covers the financing activities of banks in settlement operations and risk prevention. For example, after introducing international settlement instruments and methods, Chapters 9 and 10 respectively discuss financing for import and export businesses, and Chapter 11 explores risks and prevention in international trade settlement. The inclusion of risk and prevention in international trade settlement is a distinctive feature of this book among settlement textbooks.
2. Strong Practicality: During the writing process, the book strives to present practical and effective content. Whenever possible, various documents and instruments are presented in their original form. Additionally, many chapters include numerous examples, and some chapters are followed by case exercises to enable students to connect theory with practice and engage in independent thinking. The extensive use of examples and case exercises at the end of chapters is another feature of this book.
3. Up-to-Date Content: This book is based on the development and changes of actual business practices and draws on many new sources. For instance, in the chapter on claims and payments between international banks, it introduces the euro clearing and payment system that fully launched in 2002 after the euro's adoption. In the chapter on bank guarantees and standby letters of credit, it incorporates the International Standby Practices (ISP98), which came into effect in 1999.
4. Collective Wisdom: This book was collectively written by teachers from influential institutions such as Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, Nankai University, the University of International Business and Economics, and Southwest University of Finance and Economics. These teachers have long been engaged in teaching and research on international settlement, possessing both theoretical foundations and practical experience. Additionally, the book received strong support from the practical business departments of banks during its writing.
5. Appropriate Length: Compared to other published textbooks on the same subject, this book has about 300,000 words and is of moderate length, making it more suitable for teaching needs.
