2.5.1 Overwrite, Replace, and Insert
1. Overwrite
Generally, the characters you input are inserted at the cursor's position. If you want new input to overwrite existing content in the document, you need to enable the Overwrite mode. To enable the Overwrite mode, follow these steps: Click Options on the Tools menu, select the Edit tab. Then, in the Edit Options group, check the Overwrite Mode checkbox and click OK, as shown in Figure 229. At this point, the Overwrite indicator on the right side of the status bar will turn black, indicating that Overwrite mode is active, and you can replace existing text character by character. To exit Overwrite mode, perform the same operation to clear the Overwrite Mode checkbox.
Tip: You can also open or close Overwrite mode by double-clicking the Overwrite indicator on the status bar. If the Use INS key to paste checkbox in the Edit Options group is not selected in the dialog box shown in Figure 2.29, you can also toggle Overwrite mode by pressing the Insert key.
2. Replace
First, select the text you want to replace, then type the new text. The new text will replace the selected text (regardless of its length). The newly entered text will not affect unselected text. If you cannot replace the selected text with the input text, perform the following steps:
(1) Click Options on the Tools menu, then select the Edit tab, as shown in Figure 2.29.
- Check the Type Over Selected Text checkbox.
3. Insert
Inserting new characters at any position in a document is a common editing operation in Word and is also easy to achieve. Simply move the cursor to the desired insertion point and type the text. As you type, Word will automatically create the appropriate space for the new characters.
Note: If Word2000 Chinese Version is currently in Overwrite mode, you must first exit Overwrite mode before performing the insert operation.
2.5.2 Delete
You can delete text using the Backspace key or the Delete key, but these methods can only delete characters one by one. If you need to delete a large amount of text, these methods can be too slow. Word provides other convenient ways to delete text. First, select the text you want to delete, then perform one of the following four actions to delete the selected text:
(1) Press the Backspace key or the Delete key.
(2) Click the Cut button on the Standard toolbar.
(3) Right-click the Cut icon and select Cut from the shortcut menu.
(4) Click Cut on the Edit menu.
When deleting text, especially a large amount of text, there is a risk of accidental operations, and your hard work may disappear instantly. Word2000 Chinese Version provides the Undo function to cancel accidental operations.
2.5.3 Undo, Repeat, and Redo
1. Undo
The Undo function allows you to cancel one or more previous operations. For example, if you make an accidental edit while editing text, the Undo function can help you recover. Let's use an example to illustrate how the Undo function works. First, type a humorous "Business Tips" in the document, as shown in Figure 2.30. Then, select the text "If his eyes are not trembling" in the document and click the Cut button to delete these words. Find the Undo button on the Standard toolbar, click the downward-pointing arrow to the right of it, and open the dropdown list shown in Figure 2.31. You can see that all operations are listed in reverse order in this list.
