Features: One feature of this dictionary is the cross-referencing between terms: other terms mentioned in the definition of a term are printed in a special font, allowing you to look up their definitions in the corresponding entries. Bold terms in the original text are also bold in the translation; terms printed in uppercase in the original definitions are italicized in the translation; terms and names enclosed in single quotes in the original text are enclosed in double quotes in the translation. For easy reference, a "Chinese-English Glossary" has been added at the end of the dictionary. This glossary will also be helpful for translating terms from Chinese to English. This dictionary was first published in 1978 (a Chinese translation titled Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics exists, translated by Fang Li et al., Beijing Language and Culture University Press), and has been revised and supplemented three times. The current version includes 1,400 main entries, with 1,400 bold terms in the definitions and 1,200 quoted special names, thus explaining a total of 4,000 terms commonly found in modern linguistic literature. This is twice the number of terms in the previous edition, making it the most comprehensive and up-to-date linguistic dictionary to date.
