Paul Baran was born in Nikolaev on the Black Sea coast, with Polish ancestry, and received his education in Germany and the former Soviet Union. He studied at the Plekhanov Economic Institute in Moscow and immigrated to the United States in 1939, earning his master's degree from Harvard University in 1941. After military service during the war, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York for a period before joining Stanford University as a professor in 1949, where he taught until his death in 1964. In addition to this book, Baran co-authored Monopoly Capital with Sweezy. Like this book, Monopoly Capital has also been translated into multiple languages and widely disseminated, exerting significant social influence.
