Features: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) was a great Russian composer and music educator of the 19th century, hailed as a great master of Russian music. He was born on May 7, 1840, in Votkinsk City in the Ural Mountains. His father was the manager and engineer of an ironworks, while his mother was passionate about music, sang well, and played the piano, making their home filled with musical atmosphere. From a young age, he showed extraordinary musical talent, but no one in the family ever imagined he would become a professional musician. At the age of ten, Tchaikovsky entered the St. Petersburg Law School, but he still continued to study the piano and often attended opera performances during his spare time. In 1859, after graduating, he worked at the Ministry of Justice. During this period, he devoted himself to studying music, participating in social piano performances and creative activities. In 1862, Tchaikovsky enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, marking a decisive step toward receiving formal musical education. After graduation (1866), at the invitation of Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, serving for eleven years. Despite the tedious teaching work often hindering his creative activities, he still produced a variety of outstanding works, including his first three symphonies, the symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini, the fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet, the ballet Swan Lake, and the Piano Concerto. This was a period of Tchaikovsky's creative peak.
Starting in 1877, Tchaikovsky entered his most productive period. He composed two brilliant works—Eugene Onegin and his famous Fourth Symphony. His later years were the pinnacle of his creative career. From 1888 to 1889, he traveled to Germany, the Czech Republic, France, and the United Kingdom, forging friendships with composers such as Brahms, Grieg, Dvo?ák, Gounod, and Massenet. In 1891, he went on a successful concert tour to the United States. In June 1893, the University of Cambridge in the UK awarded him an honorary doctorate. During this time, in addition to Eugene Onegin and the Fourth Symphony, he composed Symphony No. 5, Manfred Symphony, the opera The Queen of Spades, Yolanta, the ballets Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, as well as The Storm, Fantasy-Overture on Italian Themes, 1812 Overture, the Violin Concerto in D Major, the Cello Variations on a Rococo Theme, and various instrumental chamber works, solo piano pieces, and vocal romances, covering almost all musical genres. Especially notable is his Sixth (Pathétique) Symphony, composed in the summer of 1893, which became his final work. On October 16 of the same year, he conducted its premiere in St. Petersburg. Unexpectedly, on October 21, he contracted cholera and passed away on October 25.
Tchaikovsky was a great Russian figure who summarized the development of European music as a whole. He established a grand symphonic musical system that differed from Beethoven's but encompassed many developments in symphonic music after Beethoven in the Russian style, making him one of the greatest figures in the history of symphonic music. His music is one of the highest achievements of Russian culture in the realm of art. Tchaikovsky was also one of the Western composers familiar to and beloved by the Chinese people.
Tchaikovsky composed seven symphonies in his lifetime, with the G minor Symphony being his debut in the symphonic genre. It is a true Russian symphony, characterized by psychological depth and patriotic lyrical themes. This symphony also serves as an entry point and "key" for understanding his symphonic works.
