Preface Public buildings are closely related to people's work and social life and are an important component of urban space. The diversity of functional use, widespread distribution, and complexity of design of public buildings are all influenced by the political, economic, cultural, and natural conditions of the era in which they exist. The planning, layout, form, and group composition of public buildings reflect the appearance of the city while also embodying the standards and requirements of people's material and cultural life. From a certain perspective, public buildings are symbols of a society's material and spiritual civilization in a given era.
In the modern era, with the rapid development of the tertiary industry, information has become a source of wealth. Banks, business office buildings, and exhibition centers have become hubs for social information exchange. At the same time, as economic and social strength grows, people's demands for a higher quality of life are increasing. Work, recreation, leisure, and fitness have become fashionable pursuits, and healthcare has become increasingly important. People are calling for high-end public activity spaces. How to create public buildings that are loved by the public is an important and challenging task we face.
Based on this, we have compiled and published the "Public Building Design Series" as a set of books. This series consists of seven volumes: Cultural Buildings, Performance Buildings, Exhibition Buildings, Office Buildings, Health and Leisure Buildings, Educational and Medical Buildings, and Transportation Buildings. The selections primarily feature outstanding public buildings in China since the 1990s, aiming to broaden the scope of appreciation, exchange design techniques, and promote the improvement of public building design in China. This is the purpose of compiling this series.
During the process of compiling this book, the collection, writing, selection, translation, and proofreading of materials were extremely extensive and complex. We received strong support from colleagues such as Professor Jiang Lunru, Professor Chen Hanqing, and Dr. Li Baihao from the School of Architecture at Wuhan University of Technology. We sincerely express our gratitude to them here. Additionally, as the sources of the selected materials are extensive, we cannot thank every designer individually. We hope for your understanding. Due to the urgency of the time, any omissions are welcome to be criticized and corrected by the readers.
