Perhaps people are too familiar with the concept of material civilization to the extent that after material civilization was defined as progress in material production and improvement in material living in the early 1980s, little further discussion has been conducted on its connotations. The Theory of Material Civilization Construction takes this as the starting point of its research. Through theoretical analysis and historical examination, it defines material civilization as a multi-level structure and further clarifies its basic connotations from four aspects: construction of material production, economic system construction, construction of material life, and construction of sustainable development. Based on this, it studies a series of important issues related to material civilization construction in building a moderately prosperous society in the new century. With 14 chapters and approximately 300,000 words, it provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of material civilization construction in China in the new century, helping readers gain a more thorough understanding of its systematic content. The Theory of Material Civilization Construction reflects three prominent aspects: highlighting the logic of history, theory, and practice. First, material civilization construction itself is a process, encompassing development from the past to the present—this is the logic of history. The chapters of this work present the strategic process of China's material civilization construction from the perspective of a century of rejuvenation, showcasing it as a whole. Through the analysis of stages such as the "two-step" modernization strategy and arduous exploration of development paths, the "three-step" modernization strategy and the overall achievement of a moderately prosperous society, and the new "three-step" modernization strategy and the comprehensive construction of a moderately prosperous society, it describes the trajectory of material civilization construction in contemporary China. When analyzing important issues related to material civilization construction, it also strives to clearly explain their evolutionary process. Therefore, readers can understand and grasp the overall process of material civilization construction, as well as its specific aspects, from the perspective of historical development. Second, material civilization construction requires theoretical research, which should be analytical and scientific, reflecting the logic of theory. This work clearly demonstrates the author's efforts in this regard. For example, the analysis of sustainable economic growth theoretically argues its objective requirements, realistic speed, and possible space in the first 20 years of the new century; the analysis of urbanization paths theoretically explains the measurement of China's urbanization level; the analysis of macro-control theoretically studies its constituent elements, main capabilities, and operational process; and the analysis of improving people's lives theoretically clarifies how to understand property, etc. This enables readers to understand important issues of material civilization construction from the perspective of theoretical research. Third, advancing material civilization construction is also a major practical task in building a moderately prosperous society in the new century, requiring in-depth research on the contradictions, problems, and approaches in its practice, as well as the development of ideas and countermeasures—this is the logic of practice. This work proposes corresponding development ideas and policy recommendations for the series of issues discussed in material civilization construction, based on the strategic deployment of the Party and the state. It holds practical significance for advancing material civilization construction and allows readers to grasp the major policy guidelines of the Party and the state regarding material civilization construction.
