Oppose capitalism

Author: David Schweickart

Publish Date: 2002-09-01
Features: The central thesis of this book is that, although socialism has collapsed and disintegrated in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, and capitalism is also not justified on economic and ethical grounds, there still exists some alternative to capitalism that can promise greater efficiency, more rational growth, as well as more equality, democracy, and meaningful work. The author calls this alternative "economic democracy," which is a market socialism with decentralized investment planning and "workshop democracy." The author compares his model with laissez-faire conservatism, the Keynesian welfare state, and contemporary "neoliberalism," arguing that his model is superior in almost every aspect. He also analyzes the possibility of transitioning from developed capitalism, the remnants of centrally planned economies, and underdeveloped countries in the Third World to "economic democracy." The author also looks ahead to the future of communism, historical materialism, and Marxism.
