Features: Movie Companion Chinese Literature Collection. The author, Mao Dun (1896-1981), was a modern writer and social activist. His original name was Shen Dehong, styled Yanbing, and was from Tongxiang, Zhejiang. After graduating from the preparatory department of Peking University in 1916, he joined the Shanghai Commercial Press as an editor and translator. In 1921, he co-founded the Literary Research Association with Zheng Zhenduo and Wang Tongzhao. That same year, he joined the Communist Party of China, becoming one of the earliest members, and served as the editor-in-chief of Novel Monthly. He wrote numerous social and literary critiques. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as Minister of Culture, Vice President of the Chinese Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and President of the Chinese Writers' Association. His major novels include the trilogy Erosion, The Rainbow, Night in the City, The Lin Family Shop, Spring Silkworms, Corruption, and Red Leaves Are Like February Flowers, among others. He also wrote a large number of essays and prose works.
