Features: "A Chinese Girl Creating Myths in the West," was the title I came up with late one night in New York, USA, under a bright moon, while quietly reflecting. In truth, I had never thought of writing a book before, a book about my daughter and me. I always felt that our lives were too ordinary, too common, that we were simply doing what a Chinese person should do. But my friends kept asking me, "Why don't you write a book? Your story with your daughter is so touching, so moving." My heart was moved, but I still didn't pick up a pen. What truly inspired me to consider writing a book was a conversation I had with Tim Johnson, a senior U.S. Senator, in his office at the Capitol Hill office building in Washington, D.C., on April 2, 1999. He said, "The other day, my wife and I attended a piano solo concert by a 13-year-old Chinese girl at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her music was so beautiful, it was incredible. You should write a book. This way, you can tell Americans, and you can also tell the Chinese people, that Chinese people are truly brilliant."
