Features: This book employs synchronic and diachronic comparative methods to study a large amount of dialect materials, aiming to clarify the basic facts and patterns of tone evolution in Southeastern Chinese dialects, providing a foundation for in-depth research on the history of phonology, dialect classification, and phonological change theories. The conclusions of this book are as follows:
1. The tone evolution in Southeastern dialects follows distinct patterns, characteristics, and conditions. In terms of tone differentiation, there are phenomena such as sibilant tone splitting, vowel length tone splitting, rhyme category tone splitting, literary-white tone splitting, and full-voiced-subvoiced tone splitting. In terms of tone merger, there are phenomena such as the prior change of the bright tone class, the prior change of the Xianshan, Tang, Jiang, and Geng tone classes, the prior change of K-tailed tones, the independent merger of bright and dark tone classes, the prior change of white reading tones, the prior change of literary reading tones, the prior change of subvoiced words, and the prior change of full-voiced words.
2. The patterns of tone evolution in Southeastern dialects can be summarized as "first oblique then level, first long then short; first rising then falling, first bright then dark; first external then internal, first literary then white."
3. The structural types and evolutionary patterns of tones in Southeastern dialects reflect the tone evolution and historical layers of the dialects. Phenomena such as the merger of (dark rising tones merging into falling tones), the merger of (bright and dark falling tones merging), and the merger of (bright and dark entering tones merging) are the results of the influence of Mandarin dialects in different historical periods. The changes such as (dark rising tones merging into level tones), (clear falling tones merging into dark falling tones), (dark falling tones merging into rising tones), (clear falling tones merging into bright level tones), (dark falling tones merging into bright level tones), and (dark entering tones merging into falling tones) are the results of mutual influence between dialects in different historical periods.
4. The tone evolution in Southeastern dialects exhibits clear regional characteristics.
5. Tone evolution is achieved through lexical diffusion, conditioned by phoneme and word classes, making it a typical lexical diffusion-based phonological change.
6. In comparative tone studies of multiple Chinese dialects, the tone value-tone class labeling method is the most appropriate method for tone labeling.
