The book contains over 1 million words, with authentic material, broad knowledge, vivid stories, and has been a bestseller for over 20 years since its publication in the early 1980s. It has been reprinted over 40 times, with more than 1.4 million sets distributed, nurturing a generation of young people. The book has been recommended by national departments such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, and the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League as a recommended reading list for reading activities in multiple provinces and cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. It has also won numerous awards, such as the "National Middle School Students' Favorite Book" Award, the Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Award, the Shanghai Excellent Book First Prize, and the First Prize of the Second National Excellent Children's Reading Material Award, among others, and has had a wide influence among young readers. Some professionals also believe that this book has a broad scope of knowledge and is highly engaging, making it an "illustrated mini-world history." It is particularly helpful for primary and secondary school teachers and parents. World History in 5,000 Years was originally published by Children's Publishing House. However, at the request of the original authors, the New Century Edition is now launched by the Chinese Dictionary Press. One of the original authors, Mr. Gu Hansong, has passed away. The New Century Edition, under the leadership of the other two original authors, Chen Bixiang and Duan Wanhàn, has undergone a careful selection and adjustment of the original chapters, a comprehensive revision of the content, and the addition of many new elements. This includes expanding the modern section to extend into the late 20th century, significantly enhancing the sense of the times. While maintaining the original book's lively storytelling and dynamic writing style, the New Century Edition strives to align its perspectives and organizational structure with current middle school history textbooks. Therefore, it can serve as extracurricular reading material for young people studying world history. At the same time, it can also help other readers understand and expand their knowledge of world history.
