This set of cards was creatively designed by Dr. Yu Danhong, Head of the Music Education Department at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Learning the piano or music—how can you do it without knowing the staff notation? Learning from books is too difficult; using simplified notation for reference is incomplete. Try staff notation cards! Intuitive, concise, practical, and lively cards will help you smoothly enter the realm of music! Dr. Yu discovered in her long-term music teaching practice that beginners in piano or music often view the staff notation as a "hurdle," especially young children learning the piano. The difficulty of the staff notation can make them lose interest in learning the piano or music. Dr. Yu found that using cards to learn notation is an excellent and practical method that allows learners to easily overcome this "hurdle," build confidence, and lay a solid foundation for future learning. There are two reasons for writing this set of notation cards: First, it is common for beginners in music to view learning notation as a difficult task. However, the author believes that with the right methods, it can be made easy. Second, the famous German music educator, Professor Hartmann, once pointed out: "Entering the world of Western music with simplified notation may encounter many insurmountable obstacles. It is necessary to promote and popularize staff notation among Chinese middle and primary school students."—This is the necessity and feasibility of creating notation cards. The idea for this set of cards was formed in 1988, when the author first began teaching piano to young students. Looking back over the past decade, she believes that solving the problem of notation remains the most effective through notation cards. Therefore, under the facilitation of East China Normal University Press, she compiled 80 notation cards. The first 40 cards cover the basic concepts of the staff notation and the positioning of pitches, as well as the duration of rests. The next 40 cards include pitch recognition, changes in duration, as well as some common terms for dynamics and tempo. Users can progress step by step according to the card numbers. In the end, we hope that all music lovers who use these cards can learn notation with ease and joy, smoothly entering the world of Western music.
