Features: A Collection of Stories to Warn the World (Xingshi Hengyan) primarily includes mature storytelling novels, achieving a high artistic standard. Compared to earlier works of the same genre, it shows significant improvements in writing techniques. Storytelling novels were originally the scripts for oral performances, strong in plot and winning through their narrative. A Collection of Stories to Warn the World inherits this tradition of storytelling while also developing new directions. Most of the stories in the work unfold in a non-linear fashion, with twists and turns, captivating readers with their complex and varied plots. A Collection of Stories to Warn the World was published in the Tianqi period (1627), with most of the works attributed to Ming-era authors, though some should be attributed to Feng Menglong himself. In the late Ming Dynasty, commodity economy flourished within feudal China, and capitalism began to take root. Storytelling literature primarily reflected the economic life and ideological consciousness of the urban middle class. Shi Runze’s Fortune at the Tidal Barrier narrates the story of Shi Fa’s rise to wealth. A family engaged in hand weaving expanded from a small household with a single loom to a large operation with thirty to forty looms within less than a decade. Although the novel promotes the idea of virtue being rewarded, it is evident that the economic foundations of feudal society were beginning to shake. A similar situation can also be seen in Xu the Old Servant’s Righteous Fury Leads to Marriage. Many works in A Collection of Stories to Warn the World still revolve around the themes of marriage and love. The progressive ideological views of the compiler, Feng Menglong, are particularly prominent in these works. The Oil Seller’s Exclusive Claim to the Beauty demonstrates how a free marriage based on mutual respect and love ultimately triumphs over a transactional marriage that only considers money and status. This novel has remained popular for centuries. Additionally, such cases as Qiao the Magistrate, who realistically ruled a contentious dispute involving three families, and Wujiang County Magistrate, who, based on the wishes of both parties—especially the woman’s family—declared Qian and Qiu as husband and wife, while punishing You Chen, who incited the trouble, and reprimanding Yan Jun, who tricked a marriage, were indeed satisfying to the public under the social conditions of the time. Of course, among the dozens of works in A Collection of Stories to Warn the World, various feudal ideologies inevitably surface, such as the emphasis on lineage continuation, fatalism, and the belief in karmic retribution. Some works also include descriptions of sexual behavior, all of which should be approached critically. However, the overall theme of A Collection of Stories to Warn the World—promoting virtue and punishing evil—is commendable. A Collection of Stories to Warn the World reflects all aspects of late feudal China, serving as an encyclopedic work that depicts the social life of the Song and Ming dynasties. It holds significant value both in terms of understanding and artistic merit.
