At that time, many publishing houses had already published annual selected works, but Wang Junshi believed that "Novel Monthly" had its own characteristics and advantages—its brand of "selecting the best from the best" and the "Hundred Flowers Award," which fully reflected readers' aesthetic views, leading to higher social recognition. Established in January 1980, "Novel Monthly" had its highest circulation reaching 1.8 million copies. Starting in 1984, it introduced the "Hundred Flowers Award," which was selected every two years from the second year onward. The features and advantages of "Novel Monthly" lie in its brand of "selecting the best from the best" and the "Hundred Flowers Award," which fully reflects readers' aesthetic views, earning higher social recognition. In the 1980s, the circulation of publications was generally large, and there were many opportunities for awards, with a variety of prize settings. However, only a few have survived to this day. Among the national literary publications, the "Hundred Flowers Award" is considered one of the longest-running award programs, starting from the 1984 edition, held every two years, entirely dependent on reader votes. At the same time, it also established an editor's award and a reader's award, where the editor of the selected first-issue works would also receive an award. If the reader votes align with the final results, the top 50 readers will also receive a reader's award, along with a year's subscription to "Novel Monthly."
